Studies

As do most painters, I have painted just for practice.

Study of Shapes

I was particularly happy with how my Shapes Study turned out and am inspired to do more of these.

Then I saw in an exhibit of my favourite Canadian painter, France Jodoin, a series of simple “gorilla studies,” each one painted on a small piece of watercolour paper.  When laid out in series, they were captivating and endearing.

I was so inspired that I created a few series of studies in small, table-top frames …

… of painted yellow birds on vivid and textured painted paper…

… of underwater caricature studies using paper on paper…

… of ivy leaves…

… and the recent Snowman Series, done on small stretched canvases, was as much a study of painting my dashing snowmen from one of my earliest paintings as it was a study of creating an unconventional and interesting wintry background.

I would like to believe that this is the beginning of something new and fun for the future.
